Too Hot to Hunt!

Wyoming is where we start our hunting season, and just like last year, it was too hot to hunt the 9/15 partridge and chukar opener. Sage grouse runs from the 20th to the 30th, and except possibly on the 22nd, it is also too hot for the dogs, in my opinion. But it might be fun to chase some rattlesnakes! Temps will cool, and we will be in the field, but not soon enough.

During the off-season, Henry underwent a rigorous training program to mold him into a model pointer. Here are some pics of that effort.

Thinking about birds. Psyching up for the season.

Dog trainer Dillan is putting Henry through the paces.

Fetch!

More contemplation about birds.

Recapping the training session, identifying areas of improvement, and wondering when the juice box will show up.

Henry hails from North Dakota and is not much of a hot-weather dog.

As hot as it has been, it was not too hot in Texas for some dove hunting. Since you hunt doves on your ass, there is not much work to overheat the dogs. The highs were in the wonderful 80’s. We had a great time even though the doves stayed home.

My good friend, Ted. I have known this guy for over 50 years. OMG.

Here we are a few years ago. That Browning Auto-5 is the one he uses today.

Kilt me a dove with a flintlock fowler. That is something, I think.

Texas has more bugs than any place on earth. Here is one of my favorites.

Henry is ready for some real bird hunting! Soon!

Thanks for visiting the Birdhunter!

Too hot to hunt – reminds me of that opening day when dad and I decided to go pheasant hunting. I started off with a jacket, a flannel shirt, a t-shirt. It was in the 70’s. I didn’t get 50 feel from the truck and had to turn back I stripped down to the T-shirt and spent the next few hours hunting that way. Dad thought I was nuts, but it was just too hot to wear all those layers. I think I was 16. Loved seeing Henry in several states of repose. It’s a mental game. =)
