Weather, moisture in particular, drives quail population more than anything else. If you hunt quail in west Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico or southern Arizona, this graph is a total bummer.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the fire especially this early in the year. Long-term it’s a good thing. The drought on the other hand doesn’t bode too well for this year’s hatch. Looking on the bright side, assuming there is one in there somewhere, the vegetation in those parts is adapted to drier weather and responds pretty quickly to even the least little bit of rain.
